Notre-Dame has tightened rules for guides: what to check before purchasing a tour

Visiting the Cathedral of Notre-Dame on your own is still free. However, a guided tour with a professional guide now requires a reservation — even if he has only one client. Before paying, it is important to clarify exactly what is included in the program and whether access inside has been arranged.

Rules for professional tours at Notre-Dame changed from July 1, 2026. As reported by the Paris Tourist Office, the requirements apply to all paid guided tours with commentary inside the cathedral regardless of group size.

For such visits, advance booking, a professional guide card, and the use of an audio system provided by the cathedral are mandatory. Third-party organizers' own systems are not permitted.

No need to buy a general admission ticket

The official website of Notre-Dame emphasizes that entry to the cathedral is free. Individual visitors may come without a reservation, although at busy times they may have to wait in line. Free timeslot booking helps reduce the wait.

The administration separately warns about counterfeit paid tickets. Third-party platforms are not allowed to sell admission to the cathedral.

A guide's service fee and admission are different things. A guide may sell their service, but the offer itself of a "Notre-Dame ticket" requires careful verification.

Small groups still require booking

A couple of tourists or a family with a private guide also fall under the requirements for professional tours. Do not expect that a small group will be taken through without the necessary paperwork.

Before paying, ask the organizer:

  • is the guide's commentary planned inside the cathedral or only outside;
  • is the booking confirmed for the selected date and time;
  • is the mandatory audio system included in the price.

During Mass and other religious services, guided tours with commentary are not conducted inside. Organized visits are allocated no more than one hour inside the cathedral.

Booking changes for travel in 2027

In October, the administration announced a change to the group request system. For visits from January 1, 2027, guides and relevant organizations will need a professional account, pre-approved by the cathedral.

As indicated on the group updates page, account creation opens on October 13, and bookings for the first quarter of 2027 are scheduled to begin in November. The exact date will be announced separately by the administration.

Individual tourists do not need such a professional account: this requirement applies only to visit organizers.

Items that may prevent entry

Before your visit, be sure to check your belongings. According to the cathedral safety rules, suitcases and luggage are prohibited, and a backpack must not exceed 20 liters. Glass and metal water bottles are also not allowed.

Phone calls and selfie sticks are banned inside. Flash-free photography is allowed, except in specially designated areas. Attire should be appropriate for visiting an active place of worship.
