Trump promises to officially ban the term 'artificial intelligence'
U.S. President Donald Trump intends to completely abandon the term “artificial intelligence” (AI) in official documents. Instead, the American leader demands the use of the name “super intelligence” (SI).
Trump stated this on October 27 on the social network Truth Social. His message was also shared by the official White House account Rapid Response 47 on social network X.
In his address, the president criticized the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal for continuing to use the usual name for the technology.
“When will The Wall Street Journal start calling artificial intelligence (AI) a very bad and inaccurate name—super intelligence (SI)?” — wrote Trump.
The president promised to officially ban the previous name in documents and other areas of its use.
“We will soon officially BAN the term AI/Artificial Intelligence in all relevant documents and not only because of its inaccuracy,” — stated the American leader.
Trump believes that the word “artificial” creates a misleading impression of the technology's capabilities. In his opinion, the name Super Intelligence reflects the potential of modern systems more accurately.
Meanwhile, the decision to rename is already partially in effect in American government agencies. On September 29, Trump signed Executive Order No. 14434, instructing federal executive agencies to use the terms Super Intelligence and SI instead of Artificial Intelligence and AI.
The document applies to official correspondence, government websites, public statements, reports, and other materials that do not have the status of law. At the same time, it does not require changes to previously adopted regulations, contracts, and archival documents.
In practice, the order is already being implemented. As Nextgov reported on October 20, the U.S. Department of State instructed employees to use the new terminology in official correspondence, speeches, reports, and program names.
However, the published executive order does not establish a universal ban on the use of the expression “artificial intelligence” by private companies, journalists, or ordinary citizens. Whether Trump's new demand will extend beyond federal agencies is not yet known.
The term “super intelligence” itself has a separate meaning in scientific literature. Usually it refers to a hypothetical artificial intelligence system that surpasses human intellectual abilities. Therefore, the renaming proposed by the president does not mean that existing technologies have actually reached such a level.
